'Nivo Varia'
An important factor to take into account is the future housing system of the laying hens as well. There are certainly differences in character between breeds, and some layers are better adapted to alternative layer housing systems. Although, the rearing system, does make a big difference too.
Verbeek Hatchery Holland is a pioneer in the development of alternative rearing systems for layers. The development of the so-called 'Nivo Varia system' was a great step forward. Layer pullets who have been reared in this system are ideally adapted to any aviary system for commercial layers. The unique feature being that each and every layer chick, from day one to the last day of the rearing period is forced to find the water by jumping onto plateaus that are above the living area's with the feed.
